1How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
3He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.
4The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
That is Psalm one. Now Psalm one and two serve like two doors. Two gate keepers. They're placed here at the beginning of this book of Psalms, that you must go through before you enter in. They serve to confront you with who you are... before you begin to worship God... before you begin to learn about God... cry out to God... pray to God... praise God... these two Psalms stand here and they confront you. "You must know this before you enter in." they say.
And they lay out two counsels. Two paths. Two seats. Two delights. Two meditations. Keep in mind it is two and only two. Two kinds of people heading to two different destinations. Two gods or masters. Two kinds of hearts and minds. Two goals. Two definitions of blessed. Two definitions of prosper. Two different judicial judgments, leading to two different eternal destinations.
All of mankind stands under one of two men. You are either in Adam or you are in Christ. You serve one of two masters. You either serve God or you serve Satan.
Two paths. Two routes. Two destinations. Two masters. Two journeys. And only two. One of the ways is broad. As our Lord said. But He instructed us, “Enter through the narrow gate.” The broad way has many smaller little paths, but there ultimately are only two paths.
